Day 148: Carbs, carbs, carbs

Did you ever just cave in to the pressure? I did last night.

The day started well…low-carb yogurt.

For lunch, I had just the lamb and sauce on my gyro, with 3 tiny bites of the pita bread. (There I go, dabbling in carbs, again!)

Movie at 5 pm – just the Diet Coke for me, with 6 kernels of Rick’s popcorn.

Dinner at 7 pm – I was starving! I started with a zero carb vodka and Diet Coke. We were at Hayden’s and they have a great $10 combo meal. I chose the low-carb chicken marsala, the low-carb (I thought!) broccoli alfredo, and a Caesar salad. Skipped the battered appetizers, potato choices, pasta choices, etc. All was well.

Then came the complications. Sigh.

Right around the time the meal should have showed up, the waitress said she forgot to put in our order. The restaurant offered an appetizer on the house. There were NO carb-friendly choices, so we took the tempura shrimp. When it came, I ate one, then another, and two more! Well, in a whole week of good eating, how bad could it be?

When the meals finally came, I got more bad news. The salad wasn’t there, but there was a nice portion of mashed potatoes on my plate…right next to the pasta. Pasta? Oh, the “broccoli alfredo” was actually a whole lot of pasta with about 4 sprigs of broccoli underneath. I mentioned the salad, and the waitress said to keep the potatoes and she’d grab the salad.

Why do I always get carb-filled perks? Sigh. I know, it was probably dumb to not realize that there was pasta in broccoli alfredo, but I was picturing the garlic broccoli I had at Applebee’s I guess. Anyway, I just caved. I ate it, all of it…the chicken, pasta, AND potatoes.  Oh, and the salad, too. LOL

In the end, I had an unplanned cheat meal. Let’s see what happens on the scale this week.

Day 147: Back in the blogging habit

Total weight loss: 29 1/2

Yesterday was Monday. I started my workday with a banana creme low-carb yogurt. I just didn’t feel like staying and working through my lunch (which I had planned to do), so Rick picked me up and we had coneys (no bun) at the local diner. I ate 4 of his french fries. I know, I’m getting a bit frisky with this tiny carb exposure, but they satisfied the little craving I had.

Dinner was at Monday night trivia. I had the huge and delicious grilled chicken club salad with blue cheese dressing. I was really hungry and I ate the whole thing!

I ended the day with an evening snack of two squares of 70% cocoa bar topped with peanut butter.

Day 122: Chicken shawarma pizza – a new favorite

Weight loss: 24.5 pounds

I woke up yesterday morning feeling awful. It actually started the night before. Just before going to bed, I found it difficult to breath. When I awoke in the morning, I felt like I had some type of bronchial asthma.

A few years ago, I had these symptoms and had to go to emergency. They gave me an IV, pumped me full of fluids, and that helped immediately. I didn’t go to work and drank lots and lots of water.

Around 11 a.m., I felt a little like getting out of bed, so I got up and went to work in my home office. We have several deadlines at work and I don’t want to get behind. I felt good enough to work, but didn’t have the energy to shower, dress, and go into the office.

I also had no appetite. I ate  a yogurt, but didn’t eat again until 5:30, when Rick picked up a chicken shawarma pizza for me. I then did the (formerly) unthinkable: I ate 3 pieces with the crust!

I have been learning that just maybe I am a little too regimented about the whole no-carb thing. I have been on this plan nearly 4 months, and I’ve only had 3 cheat meals, and never a whole cheat day. Brandon and Lindsey are much looser about eating a few carbs now and then, and they are losing weight like crazy. I think on a day when I felt like hell, I could eat three pizza crusts.

So, that was that. I was full, took a late nap, awoke to watch some TV in my easy chair and called it a day.

Day 119: Disappointing meal choice at trivia

Weight loss: 24.5 pounds

Breakfast: yogurt

Lunch: 2 Beddar Cheddars

Dinner: trivia

I wanted to try something different at trivia, so I thought I’d get the steak and cilantro empanadas with spicy Ranch sauce. How difficult could it be to eat only the insides, right?

Very difficult. I cut each of the 8 empanadas in half, and used my fork to scoop out the insides. There was about one and a half teaspoons of filling in each. The exterior “shell” was really thick and made up the composition of most of the empanada. They were good, but I left unsatisfied and hungry.

When I got home, I made 3 ham/cream cheese rolls to tide me over until bed time. I guess there are some foods that just can’t be adapted to the keto plan.

Day 116: Small meals and not much appetite

Today’s weight loss: 3 pounds   Total weight loss: 23.5

Well, it appears I’m going in the right direction again. I’m not as excited about a 3 pound loss when it’s the same pounds the second time around. I won’t look a gift horse in the mouth. If I lose another 4 pounds, I’ll be at my lowest weight since starting keto. Hope next week’s numbers are just as good.

Some Fridays I work at home. Other Fridays I only have a few hours to work. Yesterday was a short day.

I had yogurt for breakfast, but didn’t have any lunch. I got off work at 1:15 and headed over to the nursing home to see my dad. I’m trying to switch up when I go to visit in hopes that he’ll be awake and aware.

He was. I buzzed his hair with an electric clipper and he fell asleep. LOL

We headed home, and I made a lunch of some Mama Lupe’s tortillas filled with Monday’s leftover chicken. I topped it with grated cheese and sour cream. It was dull.

I wasn’t hungry for dinner, so I drank a couple of glasses of water and had some cheese.

Later, ate a handful of almonds, then had a container of one of the delicious new low carb yogurt flavors from Kroger: banana cream pie. It was really good and hit the spot.

Day 113: Jimmy John’s Lulu unwich and chicken shawarma pizza

Total weight loss: 20 pounds. Next weigh-in: Saturday, May 5th

I started my Tuesday with yogurt (am I a creature of habit, or what?)

For lunch, I opened up my “half” of leftover salad and discovered that I had only put chicken into the container. I think I started to halve the salad and we were asked a trivia question which distracted me. It is what I’m there for, after all.

So, I tried eating some almonds, but I was disappointed that I didn’t have a very exciting lunch, so I asked Brandon to pick me up a Jimmy John’s Unwich while he was getting his own. I’m a staunch liberal, as well as an aware consumer, and I don’t frequent Jimmy John’s on principle. He is a conservative who has denigrated my favorite president and he supports everything I dislike politically.

So, that being said, I had an Unwich. Sigh. I’m SORRY, my liberal friends. I won’t do it again. I promise.

After work, Rick and I went to work on the house. On the way, we noticed that our local restaurant was serving chicken shawarma pizza. That just sounds yummy. On that way home, I stopped in to pick one up, and ordered some fried kibbies for Rick. I ate 2 bites. Sometimes that’s all it takes to get the cravings under control.

Of course, while there, I tried to interest the owner’s nephew in a website. I left some company literature, so we’ll see.

The pizza was just scrumptious! I ate only the top with some extra garlic sauce. It was like eating shawarma imbedded in cheese. yum yum yum. Here are some before and after shots. LOL

I have to say, I will be getting the shawarma pizza again. And my dog loved the crusts! Rick ate some, but we had two leftover pieces for the next day’s lunch. We had low-carb mousse for dessert.

Day 109: Drinks and appetizers – keto friendly versions

Total weight loss: 24 pounds. Next weigh-in: Saturday, April 28th

FRIDAY!

I started the morning with low carb yogurt, and I had 2 Beddar Cheddar sausages for lunch.

After work, we went searching for a place to relax for drinks and dinner outside. It’s our favorite end-of-the-workweek thing to do. We went to U.S. 12.

I usually order the steak bites, but Rick pointed out the Mexican pizza on the menu, so I decided to try it. The waitress brought a huge 3-tortilla “sandwich” which sat on top of a bed of rice. The meat was some type of stew. NOT, what I ordered!

I was pretty hungry, but the vodka and Diet Cokes were helping a bit.

When I finally received the correct order, the pizza was pretty satisfying. Without the crust, it wasn’t much different from eating shell-less taco salad.

It was a nice end to the week, and I remained under carb count for the day. We had chocolate mousse at home for dessert…keto-friendly, of course!

Day 108: Dinner out – back on track

Total weight loss: 24 pounds. Next weigh-in: Saturday, April 28th

I forgot to show pics of my newest Netrition order yesterday. I bought 3 different kinds of cheese chips, plus some large Parmesan cheese crisps.

The crisps were the best, but all of the items were a bit pricy. I guess if you compare the 3 portions you get from each bag to the price of 3 portions of potato chips, they come out even in price. Maybe. They are a bit crumbly, but well-packaged. There just aren’t many of them. They taste about the same as the ones I make myself in the oven, but they are thicker and crispier. They make a great base for eating crab dip or other items usually eaten on crackers or tortilla chips.

By the way, the baked cheese “chips” are TINY. They would help assuage any chip craving, though.

To get back to my progress, I had a boring, but good day. I had yogurt for breakfast, almonds for a snack, a thick and yummy baconzilla with no bun for lunch, and a salad at trivia.

Day 85: Love those steak bites

Total weight loss: 21.5 pounds   Next weigh-in: Saturday, April 7th

Work wasn’t quite as crazy as usual. The book is at the printer, and now we just need to update little details for our upcoming class. I had time to heat my eggs for breakfast, but didn’t really prepare for lunch, so I just ate a yogurt I found in the fridge.

After work, we decided to go to a local bar that has outdoor seating. It was a beautiful day, and we sat outside watching the traffic go by. I ordered the teriayaki steak bites, gave Rick my pita bread, and enjoyed 2 vodka and Diet Cokes. It was a relaxing and fun date.

The steak bites were delicious, but I hadn’t eaten much all day, so I had a handful of almonds before bed and and topped so 70% chocolate squares with natural peanut butter. I was still well under 20 grams of carbs for the day.

Day 84: How many carbs in a stuffed mushroom?

Total weight loss: 21.5 pounds   Next weigh-in: Saturday, April 7th

What a way to start the week. I had a 3-hour long dentist appointment: one crown and one new filling. By the time I left, I had a numb mouth and a ravenous appetite.

On the way to work, I stopped at Checkers for a Baconzilla to go. I knew it would be a while before my mouth was functioning, but I wanted to be prepared for lunch. When I arrived at work, I ate a low carb yogurt to hold me over until the numbness was gone.

Around 2, I ate the burger with no bun, and I ate some almonds, as well.

After work, we had some Palmerworks business to attend to. We hadn’t gotten around to opening our company bank account, so we stopped at 5/3 Bank to do that. We stopped off at home afterwards and I ate another handful of almonds to tide me over until I had dinner at Albert’s trivia.

I usually order the grilled chicken salad, but my friend Jim pointed out that the crab-stuffed mushrooms appetizer looked like all low-carb ingredients: mushrooms, crabs, and cheese. I ordered them and they were really delicious. I donated the garlic bread to Jim. Keeping it honest, I also had one of his steak fries. I ate it in 4 very slow bites. LOL

When I returned home last night, I discovered a problem. As I attempted to enter my dinner into myfitnesspal.com, I found a HUGE variety of numbers for the amount of carbs: everything from 3 grams of net carbs for 3 mushrooms to 10 grams for ONE. I started wondering…did they contain bread crumbs or some other high-carb ingredient I hadn’t thought of? What about the carb count of crab vs. KRAB?

How do I truly know if there are any carb-laden ingredients in anything I order at a restaurant?

I suppose those are the chances one takes when eating out. Keeping track of carbs is so much easier when I cook a dish at home, but neither Rick nor I have had time to cook this very busy weekend/week. I start my “vacation” Friday, so I’ll have some time to get a few dishes together for next week. I’d like to try a low-carb crock pot chili recipe I found online.

I ended the day with low carb chocolate mousse.
